About the Graduate Development Programme

Rand Water’s Graduate Development Programme (GDP) is a sector-specific initiative designed to nurture and develop young talent who can drive innovation and sustainability in the water sector. This programme aims to prepare graduates for technical excellence while aligning with national skills development priorities and supporting sustainable water resource management.

You will join a dynamic learning environment within the Rand Water Academy’s Technical School, where theory meets practice. Throughout the 24 months, you will engage in a combination of fieldwork, laboratory activities, research projects, and real-time problem-solving assignments that reflect current industry challenges.

Whether it’s monitoring water quality, designing treatment solutions, implementing digital innovation, or supporting environmental sustainability, the GDP will enable you to develop the practical and leadership skills needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

Areas of Focus

As a participant in this programme, you will be immersed in the following core focus areas:

  • Freshwater Aquatic Sciences
    Learn how aquatic ecosystems function and how to assess water quality and health using biological, chemical, and physical indicators.
  • Water Technology
    Gain exposure to the treatment processes involved in producing clean and safe drinking water, including filtration, disinfection, and distribution systems.
  • Wastewater Technology
    Understand the systems and innovations used in wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal, ensuring environmental compliance and sustainability.
  • Digital Technology & Innovation

Who Should Apply?

  • Academic Qualifications:
    An NQF Level 9 Master’s degree in one of the following fields:
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
  • Employment Status:
    • You must be currently unemployed.
    • You should not have prior work experience in your field of study.
  • Citizenship & Age:
    • You must be a South African citizen.
    • You must be under the age of 35, in accordance with the National Skills Development Strategy III.
  • Additional Advantage:
    • Possession of a valid Code 08 driver’s license is advantageous but not a strict requirement.
